Zip Drive USB emulator #6588
Hi Folks,
Back with another weird question.
I have an old G 1000 keyboard, a decent instrument, but very heavy, and I was wondering if there is such a thing as a usb-Zip drive emulator.
There is one for the floppy drive, (see
), but I can't find anything for a zip drive.
Any way around this

There were a few around back in the day, but I cannot remember ever reading anything from someone who used one in real life.

I imagine Google is your best bet for info...

I got rid of my G1000 before I had any problems (after well over 10 years of solid use!), so I can’t speak from experience.

Thanks Diki, nothing on Google. Seems strange that you can get a floppy emulator but not a Zip drive emulator.
It's not a problem anyway, the G1000 is only for playing around with.

Try doing a search for Zip emulator and Kurzweil. I think I remember something about it back when Kurzweil used SCSI drives for data...

I still have a new Zip drive for the G1000, I never needed it when I sold my 10 year old G1000. I also have a new external zip drive (250) and a used 100 zip drive.. they are scci, so I doubt I will ever need them.. They are in my inventory.

Thanks Fran, but the Zip drive in the G1000 is working perfectly and I even have a spare Zip Drive. I was just looking for an easier war way to move files about.
Like everybody else, I may have too much time on my hands at the moment and I was looking for a little project to do.
Stay safe everyone

The main thing is to have an easy way to back up the ZIP disks to computer. A lot of G1000 data can be read by more modern Roland’s (at least styles and SMF’s) so backing up as much as possible to more robust modern media future proofs you for that inevitable day when the G1000 dies, and also protects you from the very common ZIP disk failures.

Do you have a computer that can read those G1000 formatted ZIP’s? A USB ZIP or a SCSI card? ZIP’s were always a fairly fragile storage medium compared to solid state...

I have leads that should do the job, but we have isolated to the countryside for the duration of Covid19 and the leads and G100 are not here.
No problem though, I have my E-A7 to keep me company.
Stay Safe and thanks everybody

Original 250MB ZIP drives cost $180. The question should be, why is this so cheap?! LOL
