Replacement keys for E50? (circa 2008 model) #5817
An E50 I purchased as backup wasn't packed carefully. The unfinished ends of the wire music rest came into contact with the key surfaces and left some ugly and deep black scratches. I was able to remove the scratches with an abrasive cleaner, but as you would expect the affected keys no longer have a smooth feel or appearance.

Can the smooth finish be restored with some kind of plastic polish? Failing that, where can I get new old stock keys to replace the scratched ones? I've seen some players mention that they've "cleaned the contacts under their keys," but I've never taken one of these apart down to the keybed. Is replacing keys a difficult repair?

Really appreciate any advice, especially a source for the exact replacement keys to fit this model. The keys are full-size width, but much shorter than a piano key. Thanks!!

But the keys aren’t dead, are they Ted?

I’d contact your local Roland dealer for replacement keys if still available. You might as well order a couple of extra spare whites and blacks.

Actually,, C and F are the same, E and B are the same, all the rest are different including the lowest E, so you’re going to need one of each, all the blacks are the same and seldom get damaged anyway, so a couple of them should do (just in case you need some down the line). Keys aren’t all that expensive, a lot less expensive than a new used arranger if you can’t repair a damaged one!

If Roland no longer stock them, you are a bit more in trouble, but eBay usually comes to the rescue...! I’d definitely contact Roland to find out which other Roland keyboards used the exact same action if spares are no longer available. This opens your options on eBay if looking for used spares!

This brings me to an important point...

I recently found that certain BK-9 spares are already unavailable. Including the main fader board (an easily worn out or damaged part). If you are the kind of player that keeps an arranger for quite a few years, Roland’s much diminished sales makes for much diminished spares. Major component shortages after only 4-5 years (and only 2-3 years after production ceased) doesn’t bode well for longevity.

If you think you have an arranger you want to keep a few years, and especially as Roland’s new arranger schedule seems to have come to a crawl, it seems to be wise to order any critical parts as soon as you buy your new model. It seems like money wasted at first, but a few years down the line it might turn out to be your best movie!
