I live in somewhat of a Roland wasteland so I can't just go to a music store. ...and I can't quite figure it out on the internet....
Question: Does a BK5 has all the drum sets that the BK9 has? Or put another way....Will midi files that use BK9 makeup tools, sound the same on the BK5?
I, too, have to look ahead to the day my BK9 dies.

Basically, no... a BK-9 has a whole bunch of kits and Tones the BK5 doesn’t have. However, if you get the BK5’s Tone and Kit list, you can compare it with the BK-9 List and see what Tones and Kits are exclusive to the BK-9 and which are shared. You could then run through your styles or SMF’s and replace exclusive sounds with those from the BK5.

Yes, a whole bunch of work! Also, your Performance Lists will not load in a Bk5.

In fairness, I’ve been gigging my BK-9 for 5+years, much of which has been beach gigs, and have very few issues. I’ve replaced the bender twice (I use it a lot!), had to clean my sliders to deal with jumpy values (Deoxit F5) and that’s about it... no button issues, no knob issues, no keybed issues..! Pretty damn good considering beachfront gigs are generally gear killers.

I don’t honestly think a BK-5 is going to satisfy once you’re used to a BK-9. If determined to get backup, if I were you I’d simply keep an eye open for a good condition BK-9. and your backup solution is simple. It’s what I did...

I only played 1 beach gig last year - on fresh water :)
I just missed a BK9 north of Montreal - I should have acted.
Anyway - the only real Makeup tone I need is the StudioX-Kit 2. I use it always except that it has the GM hand clap in the wrong place - thus I created a user set based on StudioX-Kit 2 - with the hand clap in the right place. So....the big question: Is the StudioX-Kit 2 in the BK5? Though painful, I could live without the organ.

BK-5 manuals and lists here: roland-arranger.com/index.php/miscellane...-manuals?start=0#430

Me, I'd miss the SN guitars, the 76 action and the chord sequencer LONG before I'd miss the organ. Plus the sliders, the dual screen and all the extra MFX's... Not to mention the mic in section.

Come to think of it, I'd miss most everything I use on a daily basis! Keep searching for a BK-9. Until your BK-9 gets problems, you have time...

You're right - finding a BK9 solves everything.
I notice almost all drum kits are the same except the StudioX-Kit 1+2 are missing from the BK5 list. I might have known.

Not very likely an arranger costing over $1000 less contains all the same tones and kits! Especially the best ones!

Checked the E-A7 Tone List (same thread)? Maybe the Studio Kits got rolled into that? Mind you, that drop to 100 in the Performance List size would also be a dealbreaker for me. But if you haven't already exceeded that, it might do in a pinch and future proof you even more than the aging BK-5...
