Bk7m controlling OTS with FC 7 controller? #5692
I am trying to understand if there is a way to control switching the OTS buttons with the FC7 foot controller. Looking through the manual there does not seem to be direct provision for this , only for controlling variation buttons. When a variation is selected on main panel it will not change corresponding OTS. But in reverse, selecting a OTS button will change corresponding variation. Is there any way to link the two together for using FC7 that I have missed in the manual? I would have thought that with the OTS function turned on it would change when a variation button is selected which is how Yamaha products work as they provide a dedicated OTS link button. Thanks for reviewing my first post.

Hi, OTS cannot be controlled via FC7 foot controller or a MIDI controller. You could save each OTS as a separate performance in an performance list and then use the FC7 foot controller to advance to the next performance.

Markus has it about right, here.

But don't worry. Once you get used to how Roland's work, you will find an equal number of things you think 'Why doesn't Yamaha do it this way? You'd think...'!

Bottom line, they are different manufacturers, all with their own spin on how to do different things. Each one has their strengths and weaknesses. For every feature on a Korg or a Yamaha I think 'That's really good', I find something in Korg's or Yamaha's that I think 'Why don't they copy Roland's way of doing this?'...

By the way, if you can't find an FC-7 (now discontinued) or a Korg EC5 (which works, after you change the connector, but only has 5 switches), you can always wire a couple of 1/4" female sockets to the FC-7 input DIN plug and use those with normal tablet momentary switches (cheap square sustain switches work fine).

In truth, I often find myself needing more complex changes between verse and chorus or solo section etc. than OTS alone can deliver. Using multiple Performances is a much more powerful solution than OTS, particularly as a Roland (unlike Yamaha and Korg) doesn't interrupt the sound in any way as it changes Registrations. That's one of the things you go 'Why don't Yamaha and Korg do it the Roland way?'!

One other way, if you have an iPad or tablet/laptop to change performances hands free is to use MIDI from the tablet/iPad and a bluetooth pedal to advance/retard a list of program changes.

There's all kinds of ways to skin a cat!

Thanks Diki, I do have a Korg EC5 connected and it works just as well as the FC7 ( and only $19 on ebay). The issue I have is that I do not have a good mounting solution for the BK to be close enough to organ keyboards (Technics GA3) to be able to reach OTS buttons when playing so foot controller becomes a valuable piece of equipment. Will probably wind up using the BK Partner app for Ipad which should suffice for now. BTW this forum is excellent thanks for having me as a member.

Try this...

Save each OTS as a separate Performance. Step through them using Perf. Up/down buttons on the EC5. Double and triple taps get you from 1-3 and 1-4 with minimal glitching (and vice versa). Completely hands free..!

With 999 entries in the Perf. List, that’s still enough for 250 songs...
