Error "Enter a valid name" while restoring a backup in Roland E-A7 #5680
I am unfamiliar with E-A7's (perhaps Fran can help out?) but one thing you might check is, does the name of your backup file contain any unusual characters (punctuation, +/- signs, stuff like that)? Any spaces rather than _ characters? Roland's tend to like somewhat older naming conventions for their file system. Is it a very long name? Going by your name, I'm guessing Indian or SE Asian? Have you used a non-Western character set in your computer?

Can you detail exactly what you did to create the backup, and how you named the file...

Thank you Diki for your rapid response over my post. indeed I am restoring/loading vietnamese backup file but I don't know why it is displaying this error "Enter a valid name". Yes you are right that this backup contained some special characters but I removed them but still no gain. I can send you this backup file to detect the problem. Please send me your email id?.
Kind Regards,
Sarwat

Not having an E-A7, I'm afraid I can't help you. Have you attempted to contact Roland about the issue? We are just a user group, no affiliation to Roland, I am afraid to say, and the first place to try and get help might be from the manufacturer if possible.

But perhaps you can simply post the name of the file. Perhaps I can figure something out. It's definitely worth checking with Roland in your region, though. They may already be aware of any language localizations that could be a problem.

The file itself will be of no use to me. All we need is for you to copy and paste the name of it to a post. Thank you.

You still haven’t said if you have contacted Roland about the issue...

Error "Enter a valid name" while restoring a backup in Roland E-A7 #5702
Hi Diki,
First sorry for this late reply. Infact I have mailed the issue to Roland. I strongly see this error as "OS Bug". I am waiting for official response as soon I receive any update from Roland. I will pass it to all of you.

Thanks.

What OS version were you running prior to the backup?

If Roland changed the memory structure with the OS upgrade, it may not be possible to restore a complete image of the board. It MIGHT be possible to restore individual user styles, sounds, and registrations.

These types of limitations should be documented in the release notes.

So to confirm, you are trying to restore a backup made on version 2.01 (which is the same version you currently have.) Correct?

I don't know whether the backup file was made under earlier OS version or not but the backup file which I am restoring must run on OS 2.01 I am so sad that this backup file is not running into my keyboard and showing the error.

Perhaps it is possible to roll back to the earlier E-A7 OS and try to load the backup again? Try asking Roland if this might work.

As this is the first reported error of this type, it is possible this doesn't really count as a 'bug'... If this were happening on a regular basis, we would have heard of this issue before now I am sure. I have a feeling this is more a case of some kind of corruption during the backup process, or corruption of the media afterwards. I'm guessing you backed up to a stick... did this operation come close to fillling the stick up? Have you had any issues with the stick after the backup?

On the whole, USB sticks are not the most bombproof medium compared to hard drives (that tend to give some indication before they corrupt). For this reason, I'd always recommend doing multiple backups to different sticks (preferably freshly formatted blank sticks) if the data is critical to your job.

A well used stick with a ton of data already on it isn't always a good place to put such mission critical data on! I have already found out that recording audio to a stick on my BK-9 goes better if I use a freshly formatted empty stick rather than my usual gig stick with thousands of files (styles, SMF's MP3's etc.) on it. I would think that the same might apply to sticks being used for backing up all data.

Keep up the dialog with Roland, but don't be in a rush to accuse them of a bug just yet. Unless many others are reporting the same issue, the odds are it's something on your end rather than theirs... I hope you can recover your data, but if not, there's a lesson to be learned here: Unless you backup to multiple devices, you always run the risk of losing data, because there's no way to check the data without wiping out the original.

On the back of your manual will be the address of the Roland headquarters for your area (Vietnam, or SE Asia, I'm not sure how they divide the region).

Roland is a Japanese company, with many subdivisions in many countries. You need to contact the area from which you bought your E-A7 from. It is a lot to expect the American division to provide support for a product they didn't even sell! Here is the Vietnamese Roland address. Check your manuals to see if there is a newer address (this is a few years old):

Hi DIKI,
I have restored/loaded several backup files and not found any single problem with any of them but when it comes to Vietnamese Backup file it shows the same error. I don't know what's wrong with it. Here is the download link of the backup file which I am trying to restore.
