Behringer FCB1010 and Roland BK7M #5449
Hi

Since Roland have now, unwisely in my opinion, discontinued the FC7 pedal I'm wondering if anyone has used the behringer FCB1010 midi pedal to control the various functions on the BK7M and if so how easy is it to program?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I had tried a few years back and returned the pedal board.
- programming without external software is a pain in the butt
- better external software is meanwhile available, so that should be easier

Most importantly for me, you cannot control the same settings with MIDI than you can do with a switch! I use for instance "next performance" and "Melody Intelligent" a lot, that only works with a switch device like the FC-7. Read the manual and there is a list of commands you can use with MIDI, and those which you cannot. If you can life with the once you can control with MIDI you should be good to go. Get a program for configuration (no recommendations).

I also tried last year the FC-300 from Roland, same problem - MIDI commands, and the foot pedals are closer together and I wasn't able to reliable hit the pedals.

There are alternatives, there is a guy in Massachusetts, who builds a cable so you can use this with a KORG pedal board with 5 switches.

I used Behringer FS112B footswitch and DIN8 soldered.
Therefore, there are only 2 buttons for the 2 most needed functions from FC-7.

There are other threads about FC-7 alternatives, if you want to look them up.

I had a friend with an FCB1010, I wouldn't say it was easy, especially once you got into sys-ex...

But obviously, the best solution would be BOTH, as there are things you cannot address with MIDI, and there are things you can't address with the FC-7 (or whatever alternative you use). But also obviously, not cheap!

My take, unless there are things you absolutely MUST have that can only be done via MIDI commands, is to go with the Korg EC5, but wire a custom harness with an extra two 1/4" sockets... Might as well use all the inputs!

My personal preference as to layout for arranger mode (I really, really wish Roland would make the layout either per Performance, or like MIDI Sets, linkable with 8 or so choices, because what you need for style mode is completely different to what you need for SMF/MP3 play, or Live Audio use, etc.) is four switches for Variation (with Auto Fill ON) one for BASS INV (so there goes your five straight away for a Korg alone!), one for Change UPR1/2, and Intro (which used with a Var1 press, makes for a break with a count-in). I don't like Start/Stop on there because it is possible to accidentally hit it when you don't want, to disastrous effect! On a BK-9 you can connect a switch to the extra Pedal Control input to do Start/Stop if you have to have it hands free, and then place the switch somewhere away from other switches!

But in SMF/MP3 mode, I like things like Perf Up/Down, Leslie Fast/Slow, MFX on/off, Change UPR1/2, and in Live Loop mode, I like the loops on the FC-7 so it doesn't chew up the top end of my keys...

Some system of being able to have more that ONE Global layout is really needed... But I guess it is getting moot if they don't even make the FC-7 any more! There are times when I am just astounded how little Roland know about their own products, and what are the very best features (and improvements on other brands) on them...
