Problem with G70 #6837
Hello! I have a problem with my Roland G70 keyboard of choice. When I turned on the keyboard, I came across a frightening situation: the display came up with a constant exchange of sounds and rhythms at random, without any control by me. I choose a user program and suddenly, move on to another, in total uncontrolled, assuming the battery and all the monitoring for seconds ... Can someone help me about what happened? Thank you

It sounds like the "default performance" is looking for styles, sounds, UPGs that have been deleted. Is this board new to you? Have you recently deleted or renamed any styles or User Programs? The solution might be as easy as restoring from a backup, or as complex as formatting the drive and reloading the factory content. If the latter, there's a right and a wrong way to do it. Proceed with caution because the wrong way will brick your machine!

Hopefully Diki or someone who knows more about it than me can give you step-by-step instructions.
If you Google around, you might be fortuntate enough to find the factory SERVICE manual (not the Owners' manual) for your machine, and it might explain how to get out of this predicament. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I'm afraid this sounds more serious than Ted suggests. Generally, if a file isn't found the arranger doesn't go on a mad hunt for other files..! You just get a 'File not found' message.

The first thing I'd look at is, do any of the buttons that you use to call up Performances seem sticky or not feeling 'right'? Is the keyboard in good condition, did you just buy it or have you had it a while? Has anything been spilled on it? To me it sounds like a button that is calling up the next Performance or something like that may be stuck.

If you can't find anything physically wrong, next thing to do is check the peripherals. unplug any cables, footswitches, controllers (expression, FC-7 etc.). Still doing it? Remove any external memory (PCMCIA Card slot. Still doing it? Disconnect the audio cables. Still doing it?

Does it do this BEFORE you call up any UPG's? Or not until you hit a button or the touch screen?

I hope you have a proper backup of your data, because the next thing you might want to try is doing a 'Factory Reset' (p.231 in the G70 Users Manual). But before we get to this, I'd like you to come back here and post a MUCH more detailed description of what is going wrong, with a step by step of what you do to power up and what IS working until you hit what specific buttons, etc..

Finally, do you live anywhere near an authorized Roland Repair Center? While we can make suggestions, your obvious best choice is to take it to a service professional and have them do it right! And, of course, if the keyboard doesn't freak out until you start selecting UPG's, BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA NOW!

hello Diki! I bought the new G70, with the original version in the year 2005. I installed version 2 and 3. After these years until then, I face problems that can compromise my professional life. One of the problems is: I was not connected to the keyboard for 2 weeks and when I called, I noticed that my user programs had changed volumes (drum parts and the rest of the orchestra). Nowadays I am faced with another problem which is: the total random lack of control of sounds and rhythms, and I cannot control this whole situation through the touch screen. If you choose a user, he quickly starts a race run by panels of sounds and rhythms. Sometimes the touch does not respond. Thank you and I hope I was the most transparent about my problem. I look forward to an answer that will cheer me up and help me to solve this problem.

If a factory reset doesn’t fix this, I’m afraid your next stop ought to be to contact Roland. This sounds far too serious to be something easily diagnosed.

A factory reset and reload your saved data (you DO have a backup, don’t you?) is about the only thing I can suggest. If it is still freaking out after that and obvious signs of damage can’t be detected, it’s time to get it to the professionals!

Pinto, did your keyboard get "zapped" by lightning, or a power surge? Always plug your keyboard into a UPS, or at least a good quality surge suppressor.

Diki, do these have an on-board keep-alive battery that could have failed?
(I have a GEM module with a bad battery. It goes through a lengthy boot process and displays some errors every time I try to use it.)

Just thinking aloud here.

If it goes through the boot process, it’s unlikely the battery. Thing is, at this point, I hesitate to offer any advice that the owner could potentially screw up his keyboard with, particularly with him being a working professional.

If this is a working musician’s keyboard, he ought to have it fixed by someone that is experienced and insured.
