Hi,

Firstly, thank you for having me as a member of your forum :)

I have just acquired my first ever Roland keyboard ... an E-80 which is in mint condition and appears to be working as it should. The info says the software is version 2.01 and it doesn't have any expansion boards added (yet).

Is there a later version I should upgrade to?

I'm slowly working my way around the machine, my past keyboard experience has only been Yamaha (PSR-900, Tyros 2 and 3) and this is somewhat different.
I'm currently trying to find the way to reduce the bass volume on the styles ... but so far can't see how that is done.

I look forward to talking to you and learning from your experiences ... hopefully in time, I will be able to contribute something in return ...

All the best,

Mike

Welcome to Roland-Arranger.com!

To quickly reduce the bass on specific styles, hit the Styles button to the immediate right of the sliders. Pull down on the bass slider.

You can store a User Style of this if you want it permanently stored (Makeup Tools). There IS a way to replace the ROM style with this edited version, but it's a bit complicated while you are learning the instrument. Let's leave that for later...

You might also want to check the Mastering Tools settings, and perhaps change the preset (or edit the current) to something a little less bass heavy. This will take some bass out of everything. Also, check your sound system and make sure you haven't got it set too bassy (the old 'smiley' EQ curve!). On the whole, the E80 ROM styles were fairly well balanced, but could be made out of balance with the Mastering Tools (the final EQ and Compressor for the whole keyboard), so my bet would be that might be the issue. Perhaps the previous owner had a very bass light monitoring rig and set the Mastering Tools to compensate?

(not sure about final OS version for E80, had a G70, myself)

BTW, that user name is a tough one to get past for forums trying to avoid being spammed by bots!

The latest and last version of the E80 was version 2.03 July 2009 which added more styles and enabled the playing of Mp3 files. It came on a seperate CD.

To lower the bass in general, there is another option to set.
It's described in the E-80_Addendum manual:

Kick & Bass Booster
The E-80’s Arranger allows you to emphasize the low frequencies of the kick drum and bass sounds used in
the selected Music Style if you think they need a little more punch. This setting applies to the entire E-80.

(1) Press the [MENU] button.
(2) Press the [ARRANGER SETTING] field, followed by the [ARRANGER OPTIONS] field.
(3) Press the desired KICK & BASS BOOSTER field to make your choice.
(4) Press the [EXIT] button to return to the main page.

Note:
This setting only applies to the Arranger. It has no effect on the Keyboard parts.

OFF No change to the bass response of the kick drum and bass sounds (MIDI channels 10 and 2).
MEDIUM Slight boost of the low frequencies.
HIGH Strong boost of the low frequencies.

I hope this will make it a lot easier.

Please, look also here at the Arranger Manual and other info section:

The OS firmware 2.01 is OK. The latest is 2.03 (some fixes) but is not generally available.

Thank you all for responding so quickly ... I am grateful for the info and will try it out later.

As for the updated software, maybe I'll see if I can dig it out from somewhere ... presumably I will need some program for my PC in order to transfer the CD content to the arranger.
