Loading Midi Files from PC to E80 #6798
Hi, I have just found and joined the forum.

I used to gig an E80 many years ago and have recently acquired one again. I have successfully updated the system from 1.04 to version 2.3 from the forum, but can't seem to drop my old gig set from my PC into the E80 song folder. They appear on the PC but the E80 does not see them. I have tried dropping them onto the external card as well, formatted in the keyboard, but although I see them on the PC, they do not show up on the keyboard. (The PC is running Windows XP)

I can only assume it is something to do with the format, although I am trying to copy them from my Roland SD50 playlist so can't understand what is going on. My next attempt will be from floppy disk via the sequencer but this is going to be a long process.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance, Kevin.

Do you have the E80 manual? We have one here for download if you don't...

Not 100% sure, but I think that you will have to rebuild your database by dropping your old files into the 'Put New Songs Here', not simply restoring them to the My Songs folder they used to be in.

It might be a good idea to refamiliarize yourself with the manual (and V2 addenda). If it has been quite a while since you used the E80, you may have forgotten some basic steps to housekeeping your data.

Hi Diki, Thanks for replying.

When I loaded the version 2 software there wasn't a "put new songs here" folder, although there was one on the old version which I fortunately backed up before loading the new version. Would I be able to just copy that folder from my PC onto the E80 and then load them?

When I did the back up I deleted all the folders before copying the version 2 folders. Perhaps I should have left the "place new songs here" & "place new styles here" folders in place.

Where exactly can I find the E80 version 2 manual on the site, I can't seem to find it when I search.

Thanks,

Kevin.

Mr. Isaac,
I'm glad to hear that your upgrade was successful.

The E-80 accepts a memory card using a PCMCIA adapter. Although no longer made, they are available for sale on eBay, etc. Personally I would start with a memory card like this and format it on the E-80. Hopefully the formatting process will create a 'Put new songs here' folder on the media. Then you can connect the media to a PC (using a 4-in-1 card reader, etc.), and transfer your songs.

A bit involved, but the E-80 is old hardware so these types of workarounds must be expected. Good luck!

Thanks Ted, I have finally managed to resolve the problem. I copied the place new songs here file from the backup via my PC into the E80 SSD, loaded the Midi files into this space and Hey Presto! The keyboard is now exactly where I left it all those years ago.

It appears I caused my own problem when I removed all the files before loading version 2 update. The save songs, styles folders are not on the version 2 update because they shouldn't get over written, because I removed then I confused the keyboard. Of course, this caused the keyboard to format the memory card without the files either so I now have to copy them to the memory card as well.

Thanks again to Diki & Ted for helping me through this problem.

The advice about using a card for ALL your data is sound, especially seeing as how you may be starting over. One thing the E/G series had problems with was data divided between the limited onboard storage (which the new OS will be using more of) and data on the card. Moving stuff around, especially data like styles and SMF’s was tediously slow without a computer, and using a computer would often give fits to the DB file.

As the UPS is really only a pointer system to the data, not a true computer DB, if data got moved the UPS would lose track of the style or SMF, and you get the dread ‘file not found’ message. With V2 able to handle MP3’s, this only means onboard memory vanishes even faster!

If you can migrate everything to a 4GB card now, before you get extensive data fragmentation, you might be better off down the line.

EDIT: BTW, you won’t need a card reader for your computer to add files or backup data like Ted suggested. You can connect your E80 directly to the computer via USB (as long as you have the driver installed) and do any computer related stuff directly. There are a couple of advantages with this. Because ALL styles or SMF’s got jammed in the same folder, it was sometimes difficult to add a bunch to audition then remove most of them except the ones you liked. You’d need to be VERY careful not to remove ones you were using! But a computer can add either color codes or tags to files that show up when browsing the data from the computer via USB.

I used to color all newly added files as red (on my Mac, I think you can do something similar with Windows) so that they were easy to spot for removal. Just keep track of the ones you like and change their color back to neutral..!

HI Diki, thanks for the advice, I will definitely save to the memory card from now on.

I can't seem to find the version 2 manual on the site, can you point me in the right direction please?

Thanks,

Kevin.

www.roland-arranger.com/index.php/miscel...arranger-manuals#446

It isn't a full manual, just the addendum...

Edit, my mistake. We only have the OS1.6 addendum. I have posted to ask if anyone has it..
