I wonder if any of you would mind posting up the Western music styles from the E-A7 ROM that aren't already in the BK-9/5/3/7m?

I am aware that the many new ethnic sounds and kits in the E-A7 probably make the new ethnic styles of little use to us with older BK's, but I'm pretty sure most of the Rock, Pop, etc. would only need a bit of Makeup Tool work to translate well.

Feel free to PM me and I will do the conversion work and repost the translations...

Essentially, all you have to do is load the style, open the Makeup Tools (don't have to change anything), then save to a folder you can create called 'E-A7 ROM Styles' or whatever on your USB stick. No need to change the name.

It has been quite a while since us older BK users got some fresh meat! Be nice to have some new styles to mess around with!

Here's the BK-9 Style List for comparison. Yes, Roland have a bad habit of sometimes changing the name of a style, but it ought to be at least a decent indicator of what's new. Alternatively, if you have the patience, just copy them ALL, then I can easily compare them to BK-9 ROM styles to determine if changed, the same, or renamed.

I realize it's a few hours of work, but you'd be doing us abandoned BK users a solid!

Many thanks, in anticipation...

PS... If more than one of you agree to do this, perhaps you can discuss amongst yourselves who does what categories, and you don't end up doing them more than once!

Indeed a very good idea to have some 'fresh meat' this way ;)

It has been a long time already that we could experiment and play with fresher styles.

A great idea, but if someone could list the new styles it would be helpful.

I have both Bk-9 and EA-7, I can do that job.
At first I believe that the Bk-9 has all the rhythms of rock and the like.
Maybe ea-7 only has more ethnic rhythms.
As I am Brazilian, I saw that the Brazilian rhythms of the EA-7 are the same as the Bk-9.

To be honest, even the SAME styles might be worth having...

Have you compared identical styles and found any differences in Part volumes, or MFX (I think the vast majority of BK-9 ROM styles don't use any MFX at all, missing out on a potentially vast improvement to the sound)? Roland have a habit of working on older ROM styles a bit when a new model is launched... After all, tough to sell them it if it sounds IDENTICAL to the last one!

But from even a cursory look at the two style lists, in only the 8 beat/16 beat styles, the E-A7 has a bunch of styles named 8Btxxxxx and 16Btxxxxx that aren't in the BK-9 ROM list. Those ought to be new, at the very least. B)

Any progress? Please contact me to discuss how to host them. Although we are all Roland arranger owners here, I still don't want to put the site in jeopardy by hosting them here (unless Roland want to chime in and say it's OK? Sure... ).

I think a file hosting site would be best, like Dropbox or something along those lines.

If it's taking time, perhaps post them one category at a time? B)

Thanks, Felipe, but can you be careful to check which drum kits the World styles are using? To be honest, if they are some of the brand new ethnic kits, using sounds of drums and percussion (and other ethnic instruments) that don't exist in any BK series arranger, they are going to prove VERY difficult to convert or Makeup Tool to work well on our older arrangers.

I referred to this in my original post - I have a feeling that much of what is brand new in the World category is going to be hard to use without the new sounds, and also of limited use outside the ethnic areas they come from... But the 8/16 Beat styles, Rock, Jazz etc. ought not to be difficult to polish up in the Makeup Tools (if they don't play perfectly to start with) and ought to be useful to a wide range of players from all over the world.

Of course, we still thank you for your effort, and it is completely up to you as to what order you do them in, but I have a feeling that of all the categories, the World one is going to be the most problematic and possibly the least useful to the majority of players... B)

Member Onerous (Ted) has sent me the Rock and Trad categories (all of them! Well done Ted!)...

As I said earlier, PLEASE DISCUSS HERE WHICH CATEGORIES YOU ARE DOING... This way we won't end up with people doing work that has already been done and nobody's time will be wasted. B)

If you all would like, send them to me at the email above (in the spoiler), I will sort them, check them, and post them up in one single collection at a Dropbox address.

Thanks everybody for helping out with this. Some new styles will be so much fun to play around with... :)

Here's the first in my series of E-A7/BK-9 style comparison articles...

E-A7 ROM Styles compared to BK-9

Blues Category.

BlueEyedSoul - New Style. Similar to Mr Big Stuff (Jean Knight) if slowed a bit.
Cool Blues - Almost the same. But New Standard as drum kit, not Standard. Different horns. Same MFX
Cool Soul - Sound identical.
Funk Blues - New Style.
Smooth Funk - New Style. No MFX
Soul - Sounds identical.
Sweet Blues - Sounds identical. Horns slightly better in BK-9 version (more horn Tones in BK-9).

Jazz Category review:

Jazz Category.

BeBopBrush - New Style. Nice swishes on VAR1&2, sticks on 3&4. Uptempo (185bpm)
Big Band Med - Close to identical. Again, slightly better horns in the BK-9, ride bell a bit more upfront.
BigBand Fast - Close to identical. Remixed. IMHO, E-A7 sounds a bit fuller.
BigBand Slow - Close to identical.
Biggest Band - Same style. Blown Tenor instead of Saxx-Shun. Remixed. Still pretty close.
BlueEyesBand - Same style. Remixed. E-A7 as bit fuller, louder.
Breezy Swing - Same style. Strings a bit louder, more EQ. Too much, IMHO.
ClbJzBoogalo - New Style. Busy! Trumpet/Sax could do with some work.
ClbJz Samba - New Style.
Cool BigBand - Same style. Remixed a hair. Pretty close. Again, horns the main difference.
Funky Jazz1 - New style. Not a fan of the drum kit, but editable. A bit Ray Charles-ish.
Funky Jazz2 - New style. Ditto. Sounds good with New Pop (or almost any other than the style's, LOL)
Gold Swing - Same style. Close to identical
Hard Bop - New Style. Organ part jumps around too much. Best muted and put organ on LWR
JzGuitarSwing - Same style. Bass and kick pumped up a bit. Better for it.
MidniteSlSwg - Same style. Close to identical. Strings IMO better on BK-9 (different Tones)
Orch Slow Jazz - New Style. Strange strings. When edited, sounds good. Think 'Summertime'...
OrganJz Fast - Same style. Bass and guitar pumped up. Guitar too loud (IMO). Bass increase is good.
OrganSwgMed - Same style. Bass and organ louder. Bass increase good, organ, perhaps not!
Pop Swing - Same style. Trumpets different. Toss up. Otherwise, identical(ish!)
Slow JzWaltz - Same style. Close to identical.
Swing Fast - Same style. Bass pumped up. Better for it (IMO)
Swing Medium - Same style. Vibes lower. Not better for it (IMO)!
Swingin' - Same style. Close to identical.
WestCrstJazz (Crest? Coast? LOL) - New style. Bit Burt Bacharach-y. Not a fan of the kit. Better with New Pop.

Almost all styles, with the exception of two, are played on the Roland E-80. (No played "Smooth Funk" and "Country Dolly")
All style have OTS.
Some styles were available in Roland E-80 and BK-7m.
The largest number of NEW styles in the Rock folder. (I liked all the rock styles!)
1. Style "Organ Ballad" - there is a veiled song "Europe" of Carlos Santana :)
2. Style "Latin Rock" - there is a similar song "Black Magic Women" of Carlos Santana :)

Can we continue this list by pointing out the prototype song for the style?

(for example: Gary Moore - Still Got The Blues is Style "Love Sl Rock" from Roland BK-7m)

I removed Felipe's earlier post where he linked to his email in the open...

Please, everyone, BE SECURE WITH YOUR EMAIL!

Earlier is a post of mine where I post mine, but a) I hid it behind a 'spoiler' (that's one of the options up by the quotes button above the emoticon), and b) I wrote it like this: email (at) domain (dot) com which makes it MUCH harder for the bots to figure out.

It is VERY bad practice to go around writing your email in full out in normal web pages that are open to the public!

Take care, guys! The spammers are hard at work... Don't make it easy for them!

Didn't say we should pass... just prioritize. And, before upping the VN styles, it would be worth checking the Makeup Tools to ensure they don't use Kits or Tones not in the BK series. Have you tried any of them in the G70 yet, Fran?

Worth taking a look at them in the E-A7 Makeup Tools and figuring out if there are any Tones or Kits brand new to the E-A7, which might be why the old G/E series is having such a hard time with them...

Alternatively, take a look at the OTS for Tones alien to the older Roland's... Also, doesn't the E-A7 have 3 UPR and one LWR/MBASS Keyboard Parts? Any chance the OTS have a three layer UPR sound? That might freak an older Roland (though why the G70, which had 3 UPR Parts is freaking beats me...).

UPDATE... Took a look at them. They have TWO drumkits running at the same time. Wasn't that feature added with the BK series? I think the G70 could only run the one, even in V3, right? If I'm right, that's probably the culprit....

Samba Bossa Category Review.

90'sFastBossa - New Style. Nice and smooth. Good one.
AcoustSamba - Same Style. More volume and fatter (A trend with E-A7 styles perhaps created with less Mastering Tools?)
BrazilianSmb - Identical
Club Bossa - Identical
Fast Bossa - Same style. Guitar a bit quieter than BK-9.
Jazz Bossa - Identical
New Bossa - New Style. Two drum kits. Got a little 'loop' type thing going on, pretty modern sounding. Even on the BK series, with no multipads, this sounds quite like it has.
New Samba - New Style. Leverages two kits (LatinMenu and Greek1) for an exquisite rhythm. Kudos!
Orch Bossa - Identical to Orchestral Bossa in BK-9
Orch Samba - Identical to Orchestral Samba in BK-9
OrchSlwBossa - New Style. Nice. Only one Intro4 and Ending4 for major AND minor keys... weird! Just starts on a different scale degree. Bit lazy, IMHO...
Organ Bossa - Identical
Organ Samba - Identical
Sambalegre - Same style. Revoiced. Thinner. Steel instead of nylon, thin electric for fat one, E. Piano changed. Toss up which is better.

R&R styles (Part of the E-A7 Jazz Blues category found under 50's & 60's in BK-9)

Baby Rock'N - Identical
Blue Boogie - Identical
Charleston - Identical
Dixie - Identical
Go! Rock'N - Same style. Brass less upfront. BK-9 better (IMO)
Over Rockin' - Same style. One of the electric guitars revoiced, panned away from center. Toss up.
Rock'N Slow - Same style. Lead guitar changed. Toss up.
UK Rock'N - Same style. Rhythm guitar a hair less. Close to identical.

Getting confusing to not have the entire E-A7 category in one file. Please be careful, if possible, to make a note if an incomplete selection.... The goal is to have ALL of them, if we can. Thanks

Ballroom category review. Not ONE new one!

Alpenwaltzer - Same Style. Revoiced. Fatter bass, less synthy. Better, IMO.
Beguine - Same style. Fatter bass (definitely a trend. E-A7 Standard Master EQ less bassy than BK's?)
Cool Tango - Same style. Orch instruments mixed lower. Toss up.
GldEuroMarch - Identical
GldSlwWaltz - Same style. Bass louder and fatter, whole style a hair louder
Gold Wein Waltz - Same style. Bass louder and fatter, whole style a hair louder
Go! Twist - Same style. Remixed. Toss up (in 50's & 60's in BK-9)
Gold Bossa - Same style. Strings a bit lower.
Gold Cha Cha - Same style. IMO brass less forward and remixed (in general, BK-9 brass usually a bit better)
Gold Foxtrot - Same style. Bass fuller, guitars and vibe lower. Toss up.
Gold Jive - Same style. Brass a hair lighter. Close to identical.
Gold Rhumba - Same style. Bass fatter. (Starting to get bored yet? LOL)
Gold Samaba - Same style. Brass a bit back.
Gold Tango - Same style. Accordion much more upfront. Might be an issue if you play accordion lead on it.
It Bachata - Same style. Bass fatter, revoiced in guitars. More upfront. Better, IMO.
It Beguine - Same style. Revoiced. Accordions MUCH louder. See Gold Tango...
It Fox - Same style. Revoiced. Guitar lower. This one, accordions lower! IMP, BK-9 better. Toss-up!
It Mambo - Same style. Brass different. Toss up. Mambo #5!
It Polca - Same style. Strings louder
It Swing Fox - Same style. Guitar/bass revoiced. Better, IMO.
It Tango - Same style. Strings lower. Toss up.
It Valzer - Same style. Identical(ish!)
ItHullyGully - Same Style. Revoiced. New kit, sounds thinner. Sounds better with NewPopPerc anyway!
Mazurca 1 - Same style. Guitars revoiced. Better, IMO.
Meneaito - Same style. Kick and drum voices worked over. Fatter, better (IMO).
Moon Waltz - Same style. Identical(ish!)
Paso Doble - Same style. Brass lower, strings a bit more forward.
Polca Disco - Same style. Different (fuller) drumkit.
Quick Step - Same style. Brass a bit lower.
RomanticBegn - Same style as Romantic Beguine in BK-9. Bass fuller, lower strings. Better, IMO.
SimpleCumbia - Same style. Brass remixed. Better, IMO.
TarantDisco - Same style as Tarantella Disco in BK-9. Accordion MUCH louder and chorused. Worse, IMO.

BTW, I'd just like to say.... HATED doing this one! Don't play this sort of stuff, please shoot me if I ever have to! Not even one new one to make it worthwhile...  :S

All Review from Diki (see above) about the similarity of styles is a very big work! Earlier, someone made an Exel file and compared the styles of different models of Roland.
Can we continue with joint efforts for EA-7 models?

Haven't had time to review Vietnam yet. As you can see, trying to pin down very slight differences in same styles takes a while! I may start to just review the new ones, and let the members decide for themselves about the same ones.

Plus, those with BK-5's or BK-7m's may have very different opinions, depending on how their styles were mixed and what kits and Tones they have, so to a certain extent, my work is of limited value.

But the styles that locked up your G70 play fine in the BK-9. No issues so far at all. Like I said, I think it boils down to the styles with two drum kits. Was I right about the two drum kit thing being a BK series new feature? It's been so long since I used my G70, LOL (and that ought to tell you something, Fran!)

Got one quick thing to say about OTS, and it may not be that prevalent, but I tested the OTS for the Rock style like Van Halen's 'Jump' (AmericanHR).

OMG! :woohoo: :pinch:

Are Roland running ANY quality control? The synth parts and rock leads are running at 127 absolutely flat out. Press that OTS during a song and obliterate everybody's hearing for half a mile!

Sure, if you are running an expression pedal, you can back it off. But without one of those, you are dead in the water and your audience is hurling stuff at you!

I cannot for the life of me understand how that got past Roland. Is ANYONE awake there any more, or are they just phoning it in? This is not how you make a comeback, especially as those are ROM styles and OTS's. You can't alter them without turning them into a User Style and losing front panel access....

ROLAND - PAY ATTENTION.

THIS is why the ability to edit ROM styles and replace the originals is SO important! If you can't be bothered to even do a cursory examination of the work submitted to you by your style team before you write it to ROM, you need to give us the tools to do YOUR bloody work for you! The G70 used to give us computer access to the ROMstyles folder. You could edit a ROM style, save it as the exact same name and replace the original. The BK's and the E-A7 need this even MORE than the G70, because it is obvious you no longer give a rats about quality control, consistency and usability of the ROM styles and OTS's.

And calling them up off the USB stick is a complete PITA live.

GIVE US THE TOOLS TO EDIT YOUR MISTAKES! :S

EDIT... WOULD ANYONE WITH AN E-A7 CONFIRM THAT THIS PROBLEM EXISTS ON THE E-A7 (check the OTS for the AmericanHR style) AS WELL, OR IS THIS AN ISSUE BETWEEN THE OTS FOR E-A7 AND BK SERIES?

One more advantage to the computer access to ROM styles... You would have been able to simply copy the entire folder in one go!

The problem seems to be that Roland are moving some of the styles around between Categories. So this .xlsx may be problematic as it is organized by Category. But if you are familiar with spreadsheets (not one of my strengths!), please feel free to add the new E-A7 styles.

I believe that those 200 styles were for the E-A7 not from...
We are talking here in this topic about the internal (ROM) styles...
Roland E-80 V2.03 + SRX-06 + SR-G01, FC-7, PK-5, SC-8820.

If I get the 16/8 beat styles from felipe, all that is left is the Latin Category.

Anyone working on those?

Plus, of course, the remainder of the Ethnic group minus the Vietnamese ones (already upped)... I really think these ought to be done by someone that has an E-A7 AND a BK series arranger. They would be in a position to easily find out if they work at all or not, and how different they may sound without the new Tones and Kits. If they sound so utterly wrong they don't really work, it might not be necessary to send them.

Your choice.
