I've just used the rhythm composer for the first time and have a curious problem. The pattern plays ok, but after a few seconds it just stops. It will start again if I lift my left hand up and then back down on the keys. Its almost as though I am running out of notes but I have only used three parts with no fills, intros or endings and just one main pattern two bars long.. It isn't the Sync/Start button as I know how to use that correctly. Any thoughts on what may be the problem?

Sorry for double posting. My iPad locked up and I used a second iPad to carry on. Unfortunately, they both got sent and I didn't know how to delete one of them.

No personal experience, but did you check, before you created the Division, that you had set the length to 2 bars first?

Feel like posting the work in progress and let us take a look at what might be the issue?

Yes, I did set the two bar length. I would be very keen to post the work in progress - how do I do this Diki?

Save the style to your stick, pop stick in computer. Make a .zip of the style and save to computer. Create a post, press 'Add File', select the .zip on the computer. Press 'Submit'.

Ta-da! :woohoo:

I was just about to post the file when I noticed something really odd - the rhythm stops when I play anything other than a major chord. It carries on fine until I hit a minor, or a 7th, or a minor 7th etc,. then stops dead the instant a non - major chord is played in my left hand. There must be a button somewhere that I need to press. Any more thoughts please?

I think I remember that you must create the regular divisions (Variations/fills) in the major key for the software to extrapolate minor and 7ths from it. Mind you, it pays to actually create new basslines and licks, as minor key extrapolation automatically doesn't always get the mode right.

But one-shot Divisions (Intros and Endings) need a separate one for major and minor. Obviously, a major Intro won't work with a minor key song. And vice versa...

Diki - your very full explanation has left me more confused. I don't want any fills, ending or intros. The pattern I made is for a medley of old songs for a dance called (here in New Zealand) a "military 2 step" in 6/8 timing. Not the old R 'n R 6/8 rhythm, but more like that used in marching bands.. I'll only perform it once a year at the most, so really don't want to spend much time on it at all.. Is there no alternative but to create all the extra stuff you mentioned? I'd really rather have modified an existing pattern to begin with, but the composer forces you to erase the old one first.

I'd worry that a style you created with no fills or Intro/Endings might grind to a complete halt if you accidentally hit one of those buttons. If there's no data in the Division, it will play, but be silent.

BTW, did you read p.108 in the manual?
If the rhythm stops unexpectedly during playback, try different
chords. Chances are that you only programmed the major pattern,
so that the playback selects an empty pattern when you play a
minor or seventh chord. Remember to set the Mode parameter to
“M=m=7”
until you have come to grips with the possibilities of the
BK-9’s Arranger. That way, those three patterns will sound alike, but
at least you are sure that the Arranger does not stop when you play
a minor or seventh chord.

Secondly, I was under the impression that the Style Composer could easily be used to edit existing styles. If you have something close but not spot on, you are supposed to be able to edit it in there. Just skip the step where you initialize the style...

Also, pay attention to p.111. The COPY function allows you to copy in Divisions from other styles, not just within that style itself. This is where you can import Divisions from other styles, and also (this is the cool part) which Parts you copy. This is the secret to 'Frankenstyles' as I call them. You don't necessarily create brand new styles, but you can easily take the percussion from one style, the drums from another, the bassline from another, etc., and assemble new styles out of the bits of others. Endless possibilities.

Lastly, do you have the BK-LB01 collection of legacy styles? Maybe there's something in there that could give you what you want, or at least a starting point closer than starting from scratch... And try doing a Google search for 'Military 2 step Roland style'... who knows? Maybe there's something you could use lurking in the bowels of the Internet?!

You are a genius Diki - what would we do without you?
M=m=7 was the key. It all plays fine now. And you were correct by saying it is possible; to just edit an existing pattern. So I just did that and got exactly what I wanted. I'm very pleased with the result. Thanks very much.

You are welcome. Mind you, to repeat what I've been saying for years...

It's amazing what you can learn simply by READING THE MANUAL!
