Please help!
I always back up my USB thumb drives for my BK9 with no problems....however, 2 days ago I backed up again using my normal procedure, insert USB stick into iMac , add a second USB stick and select all, then drag all files over to the new USB stick

Only this time, the iMac "shows" the style files in finder but the BK9 DOESNT SHOW Any Performance lists at all.WHEN INSERTED into BK9

I've been backing up this way for over 3 years, never a problem until now....I've tried new USB sticks, reformatting sticks, everything.....I only have 2 working stacks now and I'm very concerned I'll lose all my gig styles!

First thing I would do is open the My Performances folder on the Mac of the original stick AND the copy. Make sure there IS a My Performances folder, of course! Make sure they contain the same UPS files.

Personally, I prefer to back up to the Mac first, then copy to any backup sticks I keep with my gear. For starters, stick to stick copying is slower than stick to HD, and secondly, you are at the mercy of whether the stick is good or not (I tend to wipe my sticks and reformat every 6 months or so, just to be safe). And secondly, your Mac drive is better maintained by the OS than sticks are.

Do you do a 'commandA' select all or a 'drag and drop' select all? Sometimes it is easy to either have the Finder window small enough you don't see all the files, and inadvertently only select (by mousing over them) the ones you can see. Do you use List View or Icon View? I prefer List View, as it is not possible for icons to get moved around to a space you can't see.

Two sticks is safe (I have three - one in the BK, one in the case, one on my keychain) but never completely trust sticks. Keep a backup of your data on the Mac HD, and whatever backup on either the Cloud or another drive (Time Machine is your friend!) you regularly use for safety of the computer's HD. NEVER trust sticks as your ONLY backup!

thanks again DIKI for your helpI was able to get everything working again by dragging and dropping the MY PERFORMANCES FOLDER onto the mac....the folder was missing on all but 1 of my thumb drives

not sure how that happened...

Shouldn't ALL of MY STYLES be in the MY STYLES folder???
it puzzling that they are not....

Sorry for all the posts Diki,
Once again, THANK YOU!!!

I have changed the way I'm backing up from now on to your method, which makes perfect sense!

I THINK I figured out how this happened.;
When saving the new data the new USB stick I was asked if I wanted to REPLACE the current folders that exist, I think I answered no....(so of course the MY PERFORMANCE folder with my data in it was not used to replace the EMPTY folder that is created automatically by formatting USB sticks on the BK9

I sure do appreciate your guidance! Roland should put you on salary,

The next thing I'm going to have to tackle is replacing the Keybed of the BK9
I play pretty aggressively and several of the keys have started feeling shaky, in fact I've had 2 occasions where a key has stoped depressing altogether! When I disassembled the BK9 I found a little black plastic part loose in the keybed, preventing the key from going down.....I'm not sure what these parts are...maybe some kind of balance or stableizer?? (I've included a picture)...... anyway, the keys work without the black plastic part, but they seem to have more loose "side to side " motion now....

I'm not sure if you know what those little black parts might be Diki.....

Wow! I thought I played fairly heavily! You obviously (I see your profile picture) are a piano guy. I am afraid that you may need to haul an 88 around and MIDI the arranger to it if you can't adjust your playing...

I'm afraid those broken off plastic parts are from the keybed itself, not the key, so replacement may indeed involve more than just the keys affected. I would have this done by a certified Roland tech. If you are in the US, You will HAVE to do this now, as Roland changed their policy of allowing customers to buy internal parts directly. Externals, like knobs etc. you can still order direct, but the innards are back to being dealer only parts. Those tabs are attached (part of) the keybed base, and prevent (as you are finding out!) the key from wobbling from side to side. Normal playing rarely affects them. But gliss and smears put a LOT of stress on them.

My guess is, you are still using piano technique for glissandos, which is the likely reason for those tabs to break. I'd practice using a MUCH lighter force to sweep your thumb down or up the keys. Or you are doing organ smears with too much palm... You are either going to HAVE to ease up, or it will keep happening. And it won't be a cheap fix, even IF Roland still stock the parts (word is, the BK-9 is discontinued, but still on the websites).

As I said earlier, my advice if you can't adjust your technique would be to buy an inexpensive 88 digital piano or controller and use it to control the BK.

And yes, as you are finding out, it pays to think CAREFULLY before you respond to file copy messages!

In fairness, if you slow down and think about what you are trying to do, most computer messages make sense. But so many people click first, think second...

Bad idea! :woohoo:

I have posted in a few places here about file strategies and stick organization. You might find them with a search. But, quick recap...

BK's can handle nestled folders (previous Roland's couldn't), but cannot create them. This is where having your data on the computer makes sense. I advise a strategy of keeping ALL data in nestled folders EXCEPT the data you actually use in Performances (you keep that at the root level of each data type folder). This has many advantages...

1) It keeps stuff you are simply auditioning separate from gig data, avoiding confusion about what you need and what you don't.
2) It allows you to organize your data in logical groupings (Works in Progress, To Do, Old Versions, etc.)
3) when editing a style or SMF on a gig (full gig volume performance often reveals mixing issues you don't hear at home), you need only navigate to the base folder when trying to save, and pressing save will give you the 'overwrite' dialog without the need to remember which folder in a complex system of nestled folders the original is in.
4) If you want a stripped down 'gig backup' stick, you only need to copy the root level files to make SURE all your Performances work... (smaller sticks read a hair faster).

But beware... Once you make a Performance using a resource (style, SMF, audio file, key set), if you move that style somewhere else, you get that dreaded 'File not Found' message!

This is the REAL reason copying anything you want to create a Performance from from the folder it is in to the root level of each folder type BEFORE you create the Performances is important. Yes, you won't have to COMPLETELY re-do the Performance if you haven't, but you will have to create one from the old one that uses the new 'copied to root' resource, save it to the Performance List, and because, in Roland's infinite wisdom, new Performances with IDENTICAL names don't overwrite old entries (it creates a new one down at the bottom of the List, often leading to confusion), you will have to erase the old Performance and 'move' the new one to its original place in the List (if you keep your List organized alphabetically or by genre, etc.).

Plan ahead! Digging your way out of a bad initial structure strategy can take quite some time! But once done, you should be well organized and efficient...

Thank Diki
Yes, I play hard, I need to calm down, but it's tough on the Jerry Lee LEWIS numbers.....that's when this happens....
I can't take an 88 with me....won't fit in my vehicle...AND I'm too old for such added weight! Lol

Thanks for all the info, I'd better find my nearest Roland service center and get a whole new keybed ordered and installed....I'm in Sw Florida, so I'm sure there is someone near Ft. Myers

Thanks again, and yes, I have to slow down and think when it comes to backing up data....I'm going to have to force myself, because the stress I ust went through was not worth the added speed!

Perhaps a 73? studiologic-music.com/products/acuna/ 27 lbs. Real hammer keys.

Trust me, you get the bill for replacing the BK-9 keybed, and no real ability to change your technique (or desire!), one of these is going to feel like a bargain..! B)
